چکیده

-.J WPI was one of four colleges and universities awarded NASA grants for student design and development of an improved glove for space suits. This paper traces the design, development and testi ng of the WPI prototype glove. Test results showed that the glove did not significantly limit hand and finger motion when pressurized at 8 psi, except in the spherical grip mode. This project demonstrated that problems originating from space technology provide excellent vehicles for student learning and can generate creative solutions.

Space suit glove design with advanced metacarpal phalangeal joints and robotic hand evaluation.

BACKGROUND One area of space suits that is ripe for innovation is the glove. Existing models allow for some fine motor control, but the power grip--the act of grasping a bar--is cumbersome due to high torque requirements at the knuckle or metacarpal phalangeal joint (MCP). This area in particular is also a major source of complaints of pain and injury as reported by astronauts. METHOD This pa...

Flying a Manta with Gesture and Controller: An Exploration of Certain Interfaces in Human-Robot Interaction

We document and discuss a number of interface explorations conducted while building a cable-array robotic sculpture in the form of a fiberglass bio-mimetic flying manta ray. Our two primary interface devices were a gesture sensing Essential Reality P5 glove and a Microsoft Xbox 360 game controller. We also offer a conceptual design space comprising three axes: mapping, frame of reference, and i...

Need for Touch in Human Space Exploration: Towards the Design of a Morphing Haptic Glove - ExoSkin

The spacesuit, particularly the spacesuit glove, creates a barrier between astronauts and their environment. Motivated by the vision of facilitating full-body immersion for effortless space exploration, it is necessary to understand the sensory needs of astronauts during extra-vehicular activities (EVAs). In this paper, we present the outcomes from a two-week field study performed at the Mars D...

A glove for rubbing and touch gestures

This paper describes the design and preliminary evaluation of a glove with individual sensors covering the tips of the thumb, third, and fourth fingers, plus grids of smaller sensors lining the palmar sides of the first and second fingers. The glove senses two types of gestures: rubbing the thumb against the first two fingers, and tapping the thumb on the tip of any of the four fingers, alone o...
